Concept

"The customer is always right, in matters of taste."

When principles and quotes are distilled into shorthand, they often lose their original nuance. In software development, one such concept is Don't Repeat Yourself. DRY encourages developers to reduce duplication, leading to more maintainable systems.

But DRY was never intended to apply solely to code. The original quote from The Pragmatic Programmer states:

"Every piece of knowledge must have a single, unambiguous, authoritative representation within a system."

This extends far beyond code; it applies to business rules, project configurations, database schemas, documentation, and yes, code itself. Despite its merits, DRY is often applied too rigidly, creating more problems than it solves.

The Appeal of DRY

At its core, DRY is about eliminating redundancy. If a piece of logic is repeated in multiple places, any change requires multiple updates, increasing the risk of errors. By consolidating shared logic, developers can ensure consistency and reduce maintenance overhead.

Reusing utility functions, abstracting API calls, and centralizing business rules can significantly improve efficiency. But problems arise when DRY is applied indiscriminately, sacrificing clarity and flexibility for the sake of adherence.

The Dark Side of DRY

Over-Abstraction

One common pitfall is premature abstraction. Developers may extract similar-looking code into a reusable module without fully understanding the nuances of each use case. This creates tangled dependencies and overly generic code that's harder to understand.

Consider two user workflows that share common steps. Merging them into a single function might seem like a DRY win; but as the workflows evolve, the shared function can become bloated with conditional logic, introducing complexity rather than reducing it.

The Cost of Change

Ironically, an overly DRY codebase can make changes more expensive. When logic is too tightly coupled, a change in one part ripples across unrelated functionality. Developers hesitate to modify shared code, fearing unintended side effects.

This rigidity is especially problematic in fast-paced environments where business priorities shift constantly. A rigid system, no matter how elegant, can bottleneck innovation.

Ignoring Context

Not all repetition is bad. Sometimes duplicating code, what some call "WET" (Write Everything Twice), is the right choice. Context matters. Duplicate code in separate modules might serve different purposes with distinct lifecycles and requirements. Treating them as identical risks inappropriate coupling.

Finding the Balance

Focus on communication. Code is read far more often than it is written. Prioritize clarity over strict adherence to DRY. If shared logic has subtle differences across use cases, duplication might be preferable to a generic abstraction.

Embrace change. Design systems for evolution, not just reuse. Start with straightforward implementations and refactor only when patterns emerge. This evolutionary approach lets the codebase adapt organically.

Modularize, don't over-abstract. Favor small, cohesive components with well-defined boundaries over monolithic abstractions. Modular systems achieve reuse without sacrificing flexibility.

Practice pragmatic DRY. Ask yourself:

  • Does this abstraction simplify or complicate the code?
  • Will the shared logic evolve uniformly across all use cases?
  • Are the benefits of consolidation worth the trade-offs?

Leverage tools. Automated testing, version control, and CI pipelines mitigate many risks associated with duplication. These tools provide a safety net, allowing you to duplicate when it's simplest and refactor later if necessary.

Conclusion

The DRY principle remains a valuable guideline, but it is not a silver bullet. When applied without nuance, DRY can lead to rigid systems that stifle creativity and responsiveness. By focusing on clarity, embracing change, and balancing reuse with redundancy, you can build systems that are both elegant and adaptable. The goal is not to write DRY code; it's to create systems that empower users and developers alike.
